Meet the Carpenters
Unlike many affordable housing nonprofits, the Housing Development Alliance (HDA) employs and directs its own professional carpentry crews. Our carpenters are full-time HDA staff and the backbone of every home we build or repair.
Each crew is led by an experienced lead carpenter with 5–10+ years in the construction field. Whether we’re framing a new home, finishing interiors, or repairing an existing house, all work is completed under the guidance of skilled professionals.
When volunteers join us onsite – no matter their experience level – they work alongside and learn from our carpenters. This ensures:
Consistent craftsmanship
Strong safety standards
A reliable pace of production
High-quality instruction for volunteers, Hope Building trainees, and interns
Together, our crews build 50+ homes annually and repair 40+ new homes, supporting both affordable housing and disaster recovery efforts.
We also prioritize our local economy by purchasing materials from local suppliers and working with local subcontractors for plumbing, utilities, septic, and more.

Hope Building Program - Construction Trainers
HDA’s Hope Building construction crews are led by experienced HDA carpenters who train men and women in substance use recovery for careers in residential construction. At any given time, the program serves an average of six trainees, with eight currently enrolled – the largest cohort to date.
To respect privacy and the transitional nature of the program, trainees are not listed individually.
